Space Renovation Categories 

This award recognizes the best residential basement renovation that addresses the client’s needs within their budget as it relates to site considerations, renovation solutions, features, and any special problems relating to the existing structure or site.

Home Renovation Categories 

This award recognizes the best residential renovation, without an addition, under $300,000.

Through the strategic placement of the functions, activities and elements that make up a building and through the manipulation of space, light, colour, texture and materials, architecture helps all users to make positive and purposeful choices for independent movement.

This category is open to any renovation (home, institutional, commercial, government or facility) or custom home design.

Architects, designers, facility owners, developers and other key decision-makers play an important role in removing the barriers that people with disabilities face everywhere, every day. Accessible design can help those with mobility impairments maximize their independence—from the elderly person who relies on a walker, to parents pushing strollers, to the paralyzed veteran using a wheelchair.

Entries must exemplify the best in accessible design and modification in areas of site design, building circulation, building entrances and features that the focus on maximizing safety and convenience meeting client current and future needs.

In the submission process, you will be asked questions related to the judging criteria below:

  • Briefly outline the needs of the client (bullet points acceptable, 100 words).
  • Describe the impact of the project for persons with disabilities. Focus on how the home/renovation/ facility integrates accessibility into the design, and how the accessibility components of the project exceeds the minimum requirements of Section 3.8, “Accessibility” of the National Building Code.
  • Explain how the initiative helps those with vision, mobility, hearing or cognitive disabilities, with a focus on function and improved accessibility. (100 words).
  • Explain how the project exceeds the Ontario Building Code standards for accessibility, when applicable. (100 words)
  • Explain how accessibility and universal design features are integrated with overall project design. (100 words).
  • Explain how the project improved quality of life. (100 words).

For this category, describe the project as it relates to the five (5) judging criteria. In the submission process, you will be asked to describe how the project demonstrated excellence in:

  • Overall interior appeal
  • Renovation design
  • Creative and efficient use of space
  • Functionality of the floor plan.
  • How well this renovation addressed the client’s needs within their budget, as it relates to: site considerations; renovation solutions; features and; any special problems relating to the existing structure.

Required information:

  • Client’s name
  • Client’s telephone number
  • Project address (street name, city)
  • Duration of project
  • Gross square footage
  • Actual project cost (to the client)
  • Pre-existing features not a part of the project
  • Floor plan
  • Company logo (300 dpi or greater)
  • List all companies/suppliers etc. that were part of this project that you wish to recognize.

Mandatory photo requirements:
You have a maximum 20 photo “slots” in the portal. All photos must be high resolution quality, 300 dpi or greater.

  • Minimum 2 before photos, maximum 5
  • 2 during photos (if available)
  • 5 after photos

This award recognizes the best innovative residential renovation that showcases unique and creative solutions. Laneway suites, nanny suites, duplexes or triplexes or any other “non-traditional” residential renovation can be included in this category.

Condominium Renovation Categories 

  • This award recognizes the best interior condominium renovation that addresses the client’s needs within their budget as it relates to site considerations, renovation solutions, features, and any special problems relating to the existing structure or site.

Commercial Renovation Categories 

As more BILD renovator members become involved in commercial projects, this new standalone award category recognizes the latest excellence and innovation in commercial renovation projects. To qualify, project entries in this category must be commercial or mixed commercial-residential.

Custom Home Categories 

This award recognizes the best custom home, under $2 Million, that addresses the client’s needs within their budget as it relates to site considerations, features, and any special problems relating to the site.
